I just bought glasses online. During the search I did a lot of research into what makes glasses look good. Here are the rules I have found.
Rules:
Rule 1: Faces whose measurements are average look better. Some distinguishing features are great but generally having your facial proportions be average is a good thing. This can be shown by generating an average face from a bunch of people’s faces. You will find that the average face tends to be more attractive.
Therefore: Pick glasses which bring your facial measurements closer to average. A.K.A you can trick the eye by picking a glasses shape which contrasts your facial shape.
If you have soft/round features get more angular glasses
If you have angular features get more round glasses
If you have a tall face get wide rectangular glasses.
If you have a small face get bigger glasses.
etc.
Rule 2: Width should finish right on the outside of your cheekbones. Your eyes should be about the middle.
If you are buying online, you should measure your PD (pupillary distance - the distance between your pupils) and match your DP with the frame PD. Getting the width right online is more difficult but you can also measure this and check against the different frames.
Rule 3: Color contrast. When picking the color of the glasses you want to pick a color that contrasts your skin tone. Do not attempt to hide your glasses by matching skin tone… that does not work. However, you also do not want to pick a color that doesn’t exist anywhere else on your face. For dark haired people with light skin tones this is easy, just pick your hair color. For blondies and for darker skin colors this can get more difficult.
Rule 4: bridge size. If your glasses keep sliding down your nose, they are too big. If they leave noticeable marks on your nose when you take them off, they are too small.
The size of the bridge is very important, especially for plastic frames that cannot be adjusted like wire frames with nose pads. Most people will find a bridge size between 14mm and 19mm suitable. Even a difference of just one millimeter can greatly affect the fit. It is important to know your bridge size and stick to frames that are within one millimeter of your size.
The search:
You are going to get overwhelmed by too many choices. At least that’s how it was for me. I tend to get annoyed at the whole process, throw up my hands, and get the next pair of glasses i see. Don’t do that.
Narrow down the choices by putting in all of your measurements and abiding by the rules.
Then you can start deciding between the few glasses which fit all those criteria. At this point it is all style and vibes so have fun.
