America's voting systems are like an old Nokia brick phone. They are outdated. It makes sense... America is the oldest democracy, and it is difficult to make fundamental changes to any large system.
Ranked-Choice Voting is like the smart phone. It's the updated method of voting. It's quite simple.
In the old system, you would vote like this:
With Ranked-Choice Voting, you rank who you would prefer, like this:
How to count the votes:
You count the votes via rounds of elimination.
First, whichever candidate has the least #1 votes is eliminated.
Now in the next round, whoever voted for that candidate for the eliminated candidate, now has their #2 vote used.
This way, if your #1 favorite candidate gets eliminated, you did not waste a vote. Your #2 favorite candidate receives your vote.
Why this is better:
This is a better democratic system because it encourages many different parties, candidates, and viewpoints. It stops democracies from deteriorating into a two-party system. Which can be... problematic.
